Mount Olive Candidates picked up their own signs

By: Richard Johnston

MOUNT OLIVE (11/12/07) – Where did all the candidates’ signs go? Route 46 was lined with them….east and west. Then on Friday they suddenly were all gone.

According to Business Administrator Bill Sohl several of the local candidates including Mayor David Scapicchio, Councilmen Phil Tobey and Alex Roman and Betty Cutter picked up about 800 of them and then asked former Police Chief Ed Katona to have the boy scouts pick up the rest, which were only about 150 for which they will be given a contribution.

All Veterans Memorial moved to Turkey Brook

By: Richard Johnston

MOUNT OLIVE (11/12/07) – The weather was perfect for a November Veterans Day. It was chilly, but very unusual, there was no wind. A small group of residents, most of whom have been involved in creating the All Veteran’s Memorial, gathered yesterday at the memorial’s new location in Turkey Brook Park.

Mayor David Scapicchio observed that it was fitting that the War Memorial that had been at the site of the old municipal building on Route 46 since 1968 had been moved during the week and was now at its new site in Turkey Brook Park and that that small group who marked the move was doing it on the memorial’s first Veterans Day here.

Councilman Ray Perkins greeted the group and led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. He also observed how well the beautiful War Memorial looked in its new location. It actually glistens in the sunlight and can be observed easily from the nearby roadway.

Gerry Sheard representing the American Legion read a prayer of remembrance for all veterans of all wars and particularly the men and women in uniform today anywhere they are in the world.

Also on hand was Mrs. Charlie Uhrmann who has led the effort to establish the All Veterans Memorial along with her son, Eric Wood, whose idea it was for the memorial as part of his effort to gain his Eagle Scout Award.

Cecilia Thea Dunkle, the township historian, who also has played a major role in establishing the All Veterans Memorial oversaw the task of moving of the War Memorial from Route 46, also was there. She, along with Business Administrator Bill Sohl and his wife, Linda, handled the details of finding the monument company, Gies Brothers, G. Sperry and sons who moved the granite monument from its former site. The monument stands 10 feet high and has a nine foot base. The move, according to Dunkle, went off with effortless precision.

The township police department lent its assistance escorting it for about three hours along Route 46 east to Flanders Road and then to the park.

Others in attendance were Don Price, Bill and Linda Sohl and township employees, Tim Quinn and Jim Lynch

Mladenov was hired by the New Jersey Civic Youth Ballet this year to perform both Cavelier and the part of Godfather Drosselmeyer.  The company’s Nutcracker is unique because it is narrated. Jana Byrnes,12, tells the story from the perspective of a young girl named Clara.
